I'm autistic and meditation helps me with emotional regulation. But I have to do it regularly and it's more about maintaining a baseline than trying to calm myself when something happens. And I need the structure of a guided meditation.
It doesn't clear my mind of thoughts but it gives me distance from them so they're less like to consume me. It's about surrendering to the fact that I have thoughts rather than trying to fight them.
It's also one just ine tool in the set. Sometimes I need to do something physical to regulate and I find swimming works really well because of the repetitive movement.
