Why Rewilding is a Natural Fit With Unmasking Neurodivergence
Connecting with nature is helping me connect with my authentic self
I recently returned from one of my camping trips, a joy that I have discovered in the last year or so. These trips provide much-needed respite from the general too-muchness of my full-time city life.
My neurodivergence means I have less of a buffer against the sensory onslaught of the city soundscape. Combined with peri-menopause and the cumulative effects of chronic stress and trauma, the filter is looking a bit threadbare.
When every outside sound makes me feel like I’m under siege, it’s time to swap the noise of revving motorcycles, construction, slamming doors and human obnoxiousness for gurgling streams, bird calls and the tranquility of the natural environment. It’s time to shake out my battle-weary nervous system.
But I’ve come to understand that my camping trips are more than just an escape from the city. By immersing myself in nature, I’m tapping into something bigger, something more, something real. I’m finding my way back to myself.
Rewilding the self
I’m not alone in being drawn to nature in search of a more meaningful way of being.
